BBCR’s First Annual Bully Laulea a Great Success

The bulls are back in town! The Bull Breed Coalition Registry kicked off its show season on January 29 in Kapolei, Hawaii with the first annual Bully Laulea. The event marked the largest dog show to date in the state of Hawaii, a significant milestone for dog shows on the islands and for the BBCR itself.

“I want to say thank you to the BBCR for supporting the first annual Aloha Bully Laulea,” said Ez Ra, host of the show. “It was a huge success. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, and they are already asking when the next show will be.”

Immediately upon arrival at the Bully Laulea, it was evident that the Hawaii bully family is truly a special community. The show was hosted marvelously by Ezra Simbahon, and kennel booths were sold to capacity. In all, over 90 entries spanning all BBCR breeds entered the event’s shows and competitions. The tremendous amount of entries fielded some great competition for the day’s events, and nobody who came to witness the shows went home disappointed!

The main BBCR judge for the event was Chas Listenbee, who truly had his work cut out for him, given how close the competition was. Chas was extremely impressed with the overall quality of the dogs, and was pleased to have the opportunity to personally see what the Hawaii bully family has to offer. By the end of the day, Chas awarded Best in Show honors to an American bulldog male, the first of its breed to claim this award with the BBCR. Although the dog is young, he was truly an excellent example of his breed. He and his owner were awarded with a trophy and various bully supplies.

“It was an absolutely awesome sight,” said Randy Haina, one of the judges. “They all did a great job. It was such a pleasure for me to work with the future stars of the bully world. This is what it is all about.”

After the day was over, junior handlers received medals of participation for presenting their dogs for judging. They also were given some important practice time for future shows when they were asked questions about showmanship, care and the breed and dog they were presenting that day. The top junior handler from each age group was also given a special certificate of achievement.

There were smiles all around, both from the junior handlers and from the people in the stands, who felt a surge of pride as they watched the future leaders of the BBCR.

“I was amazed at the number of bully breeds entering in each class, and amazed at the number of responsible owners who brought out bullies to support the breed,” said Loretta Lehuanani Madera, who participated in the event. “It was awesome from the start of the show until the end. The people stayed and supported each other throughout.”

Did you miss the first annual Bully Laulea? Don’t worry! You can catch up with all of the highlights on Hawaiian television own pet show, Pet HUI. Directors were on site during the day filming, snapping pictures and conducting interviews with owners and handlers.

The 2012 BBCR show season is off to a great start, thanks to a fantastic opening event in Kapolei. There is a lot of promise for the rest of the year, and we look forward to seeing what the coming months will bring!
