In 1989 there were two Breed Bans passed by uneducated politicians in response to mass hysteria and media frenzy. These bans were in Miami-Dade County, Florida and in Denver, Colorado. Ohio followed quickly, along with countless other cities and counties throughout the USA. As a direct result of this legislative action, hundreds of thousands of these sentient beings, known as our best friends, were slaughtered “humanely”. The bans targeted the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire Terrier, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, or their direct relative.
These bans are ineffective, do not protect the general public, and are costly to attempt to enforce. There are Dangerous Dog Ordinances that can be effective with dangerous dogs of any breed, as you cannot generalize a breed. It is impossible to determine the breed of a dog strictly on visual physical traits or characteristics. Therefore, the majority of these sentenced dogs were not even slightly related to the banned breeds. Additionally, just because a dog is born a certain breed, does not deem it dangerous. The myth about their “locking jaws”, are just that…a myth, as it is anatomically impossible for the jaws of a dog to “lock”.
The penalties, fines and procedures imposed by these ordinances, are steep and inhumane. The owners are given fines/penalties for harboring or keeping an illegal dog and authorities often proceed to remove the dog(s) from the home. Dogs are taken to a shelter where they are euthanized or, more correctly said, “killed” with our tax dollars. Their remains are handed to the grieving owners in a black trash bag, courtesy of our failed system. There are 75 banned breeds in our nation today.
To add to the fire, fools using the loyalty of these dogs for lustrous gains in dog fighting, make headlines and feed the media. This bloody sport is responsible for a large percent of the actions taken by our government in passing ban breeds.
As a responsible owner and advocate for your breed, you must speak out against this canine genocide. There are numerous organizations that are actively fighting BSL. Miami Coalition Against Breed Specific Legislation (MCABSL), No Kill Nation (NKN), BBCR, UKC, AKC, and scores of independent rescue organizations.
Support your breed and not the deed! Let your voice be heard out there as we work together to put an end to BSL!
“Breed Specific Legislation is an inhumane tool, used to deal with man’s destruction of their own fears. It targets innocent animals, who were not put on this Earth to be judged by us.”~Dahlia Canes
